The series ‘untitled attempt’ balances between my former paintings, recent sculptures and drawings. Between body and landscape, internal and external, recollection and imagination.
The visual elements are partly based on a drawn diary I made in 2020-21. These drawings archived observations of my internal body; traces of sensory perceptions, memories and thoughts that are absorbed by our bodies throughout our lives.
‘Untitled attempt (to carry)’ stems from my doubts surrounding the choice for motherhood. The contour follows the shape of my breath when I imagine carrying a life within me. As with a fertility statue, the body is reduced to abdomen, hips and genitals.
The contour of 'Untitled attempt (to intrude)' derives from the shape of an excavated mummy; an unknown individual who was buried in a fetal position. In the painting the mummified body intertwines with observations of my own body and with the landscape. Body and landscape, past and present, I and the other merge together.
‘All of these bodies are necessarily brought into being by another body of water that dissolves, partially or completely, to water the bodies that will follow. On a geological scale, we have all arisen out of the same primordial soup’, - Astrida Neimanis.
